Currently, 16,411 people in the U.S. await life-saving liver transplants. In our region alone, 747 people await life-saving transplants.
Currently, there are 4,068 people awaiting heart transplants in the U.S. 106 people in our region are awaiting heart transplants.
108,667 people in the United States are currently on the waiting list for kidney transplants. In the Gift of Life service region, 5,324 people are waiting on a life-saving kidney transplant.
In children, the small intestine is often transplanted in combination with the liver, stomach and pancreas – a multi-organ transplant.
Currently, 1,653 people await life-saving lung transplants in the U.S. In our region alone, 108 individuals are on the waiting list for a lung transplant.
Pancreas transplants offer hope to patients with type 1 diabetes. Currently, 1,201 Americans are on the waiting list for a pancreas transplant.
While many people are familiar with the idea of organ donation, tissue donation is not as familiar, but is no less a gift of life. The gift of donated tissue can help many people in a variety of ways and the stories of lives changed by generous donors are countless.
