Teen racer ‘driven’ to save lives after mom’s liver transplant

For nearly a decade, Michele Bruno and her husband Charlie have spent most of their weekends visiting dirt tracks across the country to watch their son Christian race cars.

Michele still gets nervous before and during every race. But no matter what kind of challenge her teenager faces on the track, it does not compare to the road his parents traveled to get where they are today.

“If you had told me 17 years ago that I’d be sitting here doing what I’m doing, traveling around the country going to dirt tracks with my 14-year-old son, I would have told you that you were crazy,” Michele said. “It’s been a wild ride.”

The journey has ended up with the Brunos and their son becoming advocates for organ donation, with an assist from Christian’s flourishing racing career. But there were plenty of bleak times along the way, when it seemed like they would not get their storybook ending.
