Gift of Life Family House
Thousands of patients come to Philadelphia hospitals every year needing life-saving organ transplants. Many come from out of state or travel great distances. Family House will provide critically needed support programs and temporary lodging for organ transplant patients and their families.
More than 5,700 patients await life-saving organ transplants in the region. Families of patients awaiting transplants are confronted with many challenges, not the least of which is the concern for the survival of their loved ones.
However, many families are also faced with significant costs related to loss of income from a spouse who is the primary breadwinner, costs for medication and therapies not covered by insurance, extended unpaid leave of absence for caregivers and out-of-pocket costs related to the transplant “vigil” including multiple, extended hospital stays.
There is a critical, unmet need to provide financial and emotional support tailored to the needs of transplant patients and their family members. The Family House represents a unique resource for the region, serving all Philadelphia area transplant centers.
Gift of Life Family House, an affiliated program of Gift of Life Donor Program and Transplant Foundation, will ensure that the circle of care for adult and pediatric transplant patients and their family is complete:
- Providing a comfortable, safe and affordable place to stay in Philadelphia
- Easing the financial burden of out-of-pocket expenses by offering complimentary services including meals, parking, and transportation to hospitals
- Creating a nurturing environment of care and support through Family House volunteers and staff
Those served will include: families of patients being evaluated for transplant; families of hospitalized patients awaiting transplant; transplant recipients returning for their follow-up care on an outpatient basis; and living donors and their families.

Pennsylvania elected officials have a deadly pattern. Since 2014, they’ve blocked 28 people from becoming organ donors – after those people or their families made clear they wanted to give the gift of life. Help us pass House Bill 30!
