Philadelphia, PA – This summer, inspiring athletes from the tri-state region will take their skill, enthusiasm and passion to Grand Rapids, MI, to compete in one of the most exciting athletic events of the year, the Transplant Games of America, being held from July 28-31, 2012. Sixty-five transplant recipients, seven living donors, and sixteen donor families from eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware will be participating in the Games as part of Team Philadelphia 2012.
The 2012 U.S. Transplant Games is a biennial, Olympic-style competition for anyone who has received a life-saving transplant—including heart, liver, lung, kidney, pancreas, and bone marrow recipients—and living donors. Events include track and field, swimming, basketball, volleyball and tennis, among others. Cheering Team Philly along will be donor family members whose loved ones gave the gift of life through deceased organ donation in our region, and now proudly stand alongside these athletes to help raise awareness.
Team Philly is organized by Gift of Life Donor Program, the non-profit, federally designated organ and tissue donor network serving eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware to highlight the success of organ transplantation and draw attention to the critical shortage of organ and tissue donors in this region. At the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games in Madison, WI, Gift of Life’s Team Philly tied for top honors with 129 medals won in all athletic events. Follow Team Philly’s progress on our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/Donors1.
For more than 37 years, Gift of Life has coordinated more than 33,000 organ transplants, along with more than 300,000 tissue transplants.
