Ready, Set, Dash!
Join Gift of Life Donor Program at the 21st Annual Donor Dash
As the weather begins to warm up, many people look to participate in outdoor activities and get healthier. Gift of Life’s 21st Annual Donor Dash on Sunday, April 17th is a great opportunity to do just that, while also doing something good for the community! The Dash offers several course options - a 5K run, a 10K run and a 3K walk – so people of all fitness levels can get involved. The event begins at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and continues along the West River Drive, a USA Track and Field certified course. On-site registration opens at 6:00 AM, followed by the 10K run (7:10 AM), the 5K run (7:20 AM) and the 3K walk (8:30 AM). Back by popular demand, the 2016 Donor Dash will include a kid’s fun run for children six-years-old and under.
The 2015 Dash saw a record number of supporters, with 12,000 people in attendance. This year, Gift of Life is looking forward to an even greater turnout! The Dash began with a group of only 800 people. It started as a result of Claire Braverman’s wish to honor her husband, Mickey, who passed away while waiting for a new liver. Claire wanted to turn her grief into something positive, so she organized the first-ever Dash in his memory. Today, the Dash continues to honor Mickey, donors and donor families – and all of the more than 5,700 men, women and children in Gift of Life’s region (eastern PA, southern NJ and DE) who are awaiting a life-saving organ transplant.
Currently, the need for organs and tissue is vastly greater than the number available for transplantation. Every day, 21 people die due to the lack of transplantable organs, highlighting the significant need for more registered donors. Just one donor can make a significant impact and save or enhance the lives of up to 50 people through organ and tissue donation.
