Philadelphia, PA – On average, 21 people die each day in the United States waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. The Dash, founded in 1996, was created to raise awareness about this critical need, to increase the number of organ and tissue donors and to acknowledge the more than 5,700 men, women and children in Gift of Life’s region who are currently waiting for an organ transplant.

Held April 17, 2016, the 21st Annual Donor Dash offered several course options for participants - a 5K run, a 10K run and a 3K walk – so people of all fitness levels could get involved. The race began at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and continued along West River Drive, a USA Track and Field certified course. Also back by popular demand, the Dash included a kid’s fun run for children six year’s old and under, which more than 70 children participated in.

The Donor Dash first began as a result of Claire Braverman’s wish to honor her husband, Mickey, who passed away while waiting for a new liver. Claire wanted to turn her grief into something positive, so she organized the first-ever Dash in his memory 21 years ago.

The Dash has grown significantly over the past two decades. In its first year, just 800 people came out to Dash. In 2016, the event has grown to more than 10,000 participants and nearly 400 teams. This year, participating Donor Dash teams raised over $500,000, which will support Gift of Life programs that educate the community about the significant need to register more organ and tissue donors.

About Gift of Life Donor Program: Since 1974, Gift of Life has coordinated more than 40,000 organ transplants and an estimated 600,000 tissue transplants. Gift of Life’s service area includes nearly 11 million people, and in 2015 the organization coordinated over 44 organ donors-per-million-population - ranking it among the highest in the world.
