Tissue Recovery Specialist/Preservation Technician (Philadelphia Area)

This is an excellent opportunity for a surgical technologist or other clinically experienced individual who is knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology and aseptic techniques, to train and work as a Tissue Recovery Specialist.

The Tissue Recovery Specialist/Preservation Technician will perform recoveries adhering to and exemplifying established protocols and procedures. This position requires an individual who can:

Tissue Recovery Specialist (TRS)

Recover tissue and perform organ perfusion according to established policies and procedures. Adhere to required Gift of Life Donor Program (GLDP) training program. Cross-train to perform eye banking and perfusion job duties. Perform duties as directed by the assigned the team leader and communicate effectively with everyone including the administrator on call. Perform miscellaneous related duties and perform other duties as assigned.

Preservation Technician

Perform a variety of clinical cold storage techniques to ensure preservation of solid organs recovered for transplantation. Provide appropriate equipment solutions, and preoperative supplies for recovery of solid organs; Transport transplant team to and from recovery hospital; Coordinate clinical activities with OR staff/ TC Coordinators/TIC staff and Organ Administrator on Call; Assist in maintaining vehicle fleet; Perform duties of the Tissue Recovery Specialist as qualified and assigned; Perform miscellaneous related duties and other duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to:

Tissue Recovery Specialist

  • Assemble and load necessary equipment and supplies for transport to donor hospitals or for In- House recoveries
  • Transport surgical recovery teams for organ recovery
  • Travel to donor hospitals
  • Set up necessary supplies for recovery
  • Position, drape, and prep donor following GLDP, AATB, FDA, EBAA, UNOS and tissue processor policies
  • Obtain sterile blood for serology testing. Perform instrument count and sterilization procedures
  • Reconstruct, clean and provide standard post mortem care to donor
  • Clean and return OR to previous condition
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures applicable to the sterilization and packaging of equipment
  • Repack and restock donor bags and supplies after each case
  • Follow good documentation practices; and performs miscellaneous related duties and others duties as assigned
  • Performs recoveries adhering to and exemplifying established protocols and procedures
  • Ensure policies and procedures are followed by the recovery team
  • Precept and train team members when necessary
  • Assist with the continued implementation and improvement of safety and quality assurance programs
  • Develop presentations on the donation process for departmental education programs
  • Make appropriate recommendation to the Director of Tissue Services to improve procedures for tissue/organ recovery
  • Cross train to perform all departmental functions that include, tissue recovery, organ preservation, corneal recovery, research recoveries, sterilization, environmental cleaning and central supply duties
  • Provide appropriate equipment solutions, and preoperative supplies for recovery of solid organs
  • Transports transplant team to and from recovery hospital
  • Coordinate clinical activities with OR staff/TC Coordinators/TIC staff
  • Assist in maintaining vehicle fleet
  • Perform duties of the Tissue Recovery Specialist as qualified and assigned
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties and other duties as assigned.

Preservation Technician

  • Perform miscellaneous related duties and other duties as assigned.

Other requirements include:

Tissue Recovery Specialist

  • Must be able to train in advanced perfusion to include imports, living donors and VCA recoveries
  • Must be able to train in surgical/OR techniques as they relate to organ perfusion.
  • Must have good knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and be detail oriented
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Experience in operating room environment desired
  • Ability to use Microsoft Outlook, produce labels from a PC and use the GLDP intranet
  • Must be competent to perform documentation of donor recovery data
  • Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicle and van
  • Ability to participate in cases that require transportation by fixed wing aircraft or helicopter
  • Must be capable of travelling anywhere in the United States or Canada
  • Must be able to drive in adverse conditions

Preservation Technician

  • Must be able to take and respond to call up to 24 hour scheduled coverage
  • Must be able to work weekends and recognized Holidays on a rotating basis
  • Must be able to remain alert and perform duties related to your job description for long consecutive hours

Successful candidates will possess:

Tissue Recovery Specialist

  • Graduation from a certified surgical technology program or completion of an Associate degree program in related profession and/or one year of surgical technology experience is required.
  • Knowledge of surgical aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and physiology is necessary. Excellent written and verbal presentation, as well as organizational and problem solving skills required.
  • Preferably will have strong interpersonal skills required to facilitate team building and partnering with colleagues and peers.
  • Demonstrates ability to multi-task and prioritize in a rapidly changing and high- pressure clinical environment.
  • Working knowledge of AATB standards and requirements. FDA, AOPO, UNOS, and EBAA.
  • Experience with the implementation of new policies and procedures in a medical setting. Good documentation practices a must.
  • Certification Expectation the TRS may be required to sit for the American Association of Tissue Bank Examination to become a Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (CTBS) and/or the American Board for Transplant Certification (CTP) as soon as he/she is eligible. It is expected that no more than two sittings will be required to pass. The TRS is responsible for all costs associated with repeat exams.

Preservation Technician

  • Associate’s degree, EMT, Surgical or medical technologist, RN, or equivalent related experience.
  • Must be capable of challenging and passing the certification exam for organ preservation CTP after one year of service or once qualifications are met.
